The Secret Art of Foley for Film and Television with Lara Dale

Join us for a talk with professional Foley artist Lara Dale!

The next time you see a movie, pay attention to the sounds: nearly all of them are created after the fact by Foley artists, who methodically recreate every noise on screen. From the sounds of footsteps in a hallway to the birth of an alien popping out of someone’s chest, Foley plays a critical role in adding life to a film.

Lara Dale is a New Mexico native, born in Santa Fe and raised in Corrales, who trained as a classical violinist and ballet dancer from a very young age. She fell in love with choreography and began creating works for ballet and modern dance at UNM before moving to the East Village in NYC to pursue a career as a dancer and choreographer.

She ended up working as Administrative Assistant to the late, great Howard Guttenplan, Director of Millennium Film Workshop, back in the days of Super 8 and 16MM.
She got to see early screenings of Todd Haynes, Susan Seidelman, Spike Lee, Tom DiCillo and Jim Jarmusch, and was tremendously inspired by their hard work, innovation, and independent success.

The precise timing of classical music and the rigorous physical movements of ballet and modern dance created the perfect background for mastering the art of Foley, which she learned from Academy Award winning Foley Artist Ellen Heuer. In partnership with Wildfire Studios Los Angeles, she built an extensive resume of major Hollywood features and important independent projects, including Expendables 3 and the Rosemary’s Baby TV Series. She opened Footvox Studio in 2014 to better serve the vibrant New Mexico film community.
